I’ve written recently about Facebook posturing to claim a dominant role in the social media mainstream. As a very Twitter-like Facebook Lite prepares to rollout broadly, now Facebook fires another volley with the introduction of @tagging.
Whether you are a zealous believer in or dubious skeptic about the role of social media in the technology marketing mix, you most likely join the chorus of people wondering aloud about the ROI it delivers. With the variety of social tools and applications at marketers’ disposal – combined with hundreds, if not thousands, of possible communications objectives – there are virtually limitless permutations of form an ROI calculation can take. I thought I’d share a recent experience of mine that distills down social media ROI to one day and one decision.

According to Universal McCann’s “Power to the People: Social Media Tracker” study: “Internet users are ’starting to focus their digital life’ around single networks, rather than around many specialized tools with social features.”
When I open Twitter, I like to check my Follower count. I don’t typically see big moves, mind you. I was, however, happy to top 300 followers last week and was a little giddy to hit 318 yesterday. This represented a positively meteoric rise in my still nascent Twitter career. This morning, though, I was surprised (and, yes, dismayed) to see that I had plummeted back to 289 followers.
