A Week of Tech-tonic Shifts

This week has seen really colossal movement in the tech world. A week that started with Google’s best-kept-secret move to buy Motorola Mobility for a staggering $12.5 billion now concludes with HP’s announcement that they’re ending production of mobile products and may (believe it or not) discontinue production of PCs. These aren’t the modest snatchings of trendy startups or the inevitable scrappings of products past their prime that we’re used to – these are really monumental shifts. And while people smarter than me will see these deals at much deeper levels, it seems perfectly clear what is driving both: mobility.

Tech Firms Increasing Paid Search Spends

Interesting research findings from Covario on the rise of paid search among tech firms. Covario reports that Q1 spending was up 26% compared with the year-ago quarter, although it’s important to qualify that there was a 15% drop between Q4 ‘09 and Q1 ‘10. Still, an increase is an increase.

Google to Goose Broadband Speed

Google has announced the experimental launch of an ultra-high speed broadband network. Currently looking for volunteer communities to trial Google Fiber, Google claims that the system will deliver Internet access 100 times faster than currently available options. Namely, 1 gigabit per second.

How to Track RSS Subscriptions

So many technology bloggers we work with get somewhat fixated on the number of user comments their posts garner (or don’t). “Why doesn’t anyone comment on our blog?” is the plaintive cry I hear. After I tell them that I sympathize (err…agonize) with them, I inform them that there are many other metrics to consider. One big one that often gets overlooked is RSS subscription.
